How To Hand Wash Delicates, Wool & Silk

Dry cleaning isn’t always the best solution for delicates, wool, and silk, especially when it comes to spot marks or makeup stains. If you need to freshen up your favourite pieces without harsh chemicals, here’s our gentle hand-washing method that keeps fabrics looking their best.

Here's our tried and tested method for washing delicates at home.

What You’ll Need
- Lukewarm water (never hot)
- A mild detergent (wool wash or a silk-friendly cleanser) we love The Dirt Company
- A clean towel
- A wide, thick surface for drying (like a bannister or table)

Step-by-Step Hand Washing Guide:

1. Swish, Don’t Soak
Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of **wool wash or silk-safe detergent**. Gently swish the fabric through the water—don’t rub or wring.

2. Remove Excess Water Gently
Lift the garment out and fold it lightly to squeeze out excess water. Never twist or wring delicate fabrics.

3. Towel Roll Trick
Lay the item flat on a clean towel, roll it up like a Swiss roll, and press gently. This removes 90% of the water without stretching the fabric.

4. Drying the Right Way
- For wool: Drape over a wide, thick surface like a bannister to avoid fold marks.
- For silk and delicates: Lay flat on a clean, dry towel on a table to air dry naturally.

By following these steps, you’ll keep your wool, silk, and delicate garments fresh, soft, and looking like new—without the risks of dry cleaning.

Pro tip: Spot clean small stains immediately with lukewarm water and a gentle detergent, as dry cleaning won’t always remove makeup or spot marks. You can also use oil free water based baby wipes.
